SEND

At Winifred Holtby Academy, we are committed to ensuring that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities are fully included in academy life, remain connected to ambitious learning and are supported to become increasingly independent.

SEND is a whole-school responsibility: every teacher is a teacher of SEND. Our starting point is the WHA Core Offer - high-quality adaptive teaching and reasonable adjustments in the mainstream classroom. We focus first on the barrier a pupil is experiencing and the adjustment that will improve access, rather than relying on a diagnosis or label to determine support.

Where a pupil needs more than the universal Core Offer, we use the graduated Assess–Plan–Do–Review approach. Targeted and specialist provision is matched to identified need, reviewed for impact and designed to build on, not replace, effective classroom teaching.

Our provision should be understood as a flexible continuum rather than a fixed ladder. Pupils access the provision that best matches their current needs, curriculum access and stage of development, and this is reviewed over time.

We work closely with pupils, parents and carers, teachers and external professionals. We want families to understand what support is in place, why it has been chosen and how we will know whether it is working.
