Modern Foreign Languages

“Learning another language is not just learning different words for the same things—it is learning another way to think about the world.”

We learn a language to communicate with people from different cultures and broaden our understanding of the world. Learning another language also strengthens our thinking skills, confidence, and opportunities for the future.

“Teaching of a modern foreign language should build on the foundations of language learning laid at key stage 2, whether pupils continue with the same language or take up a new one. Teaching should focus on developing the breadth and depth of pupils’ competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing, based on a sound foundation of core grammar and vocabulary. It should enable pupils to understand and communicate personal and factual information that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, developing and justifying points of view in speech and writing, with increased spontaneity, independence and accuracy. It should provide suitable preparation for further study.” Adapted from National Curriculum, DfE, 2013.

We learn languages so students can communicate with people from different countries and understand the wider world. Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum helps students grow into confident, curious learners who enjoy exploring new cultures. We focus on building strong skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing so students can use the language in real‑life situations. Learning a language also strengthens memory, problem‑solving and resilience, helping students succeed across all subjects. We want every student to feel that learning a language is achievable, enjoyable and valuable for their future. By the end of their studies, students will have the knowledge, confidence and cultural awareness to use the language beyond the classroom.
