A rewarded brunch

newbrunch2.jpg

Today, pupils in Hedoncrofte, Riseholme and Sefholme enjoyed their reward Brunch – Mr Ziebeck and the House teams provided pupils who had a 100% attendance and no more than 5 behaviour points this term, with bacon sandwiches (cooked by Mr Ziebeck and the House Teams), croissants, muffins and drinks. Well done to all those invited!

We will have more House Brunches next term for those pupils getting it right at the Academy.

Dapper Champions League winners

dapperwinners.jpg

Congratulations to all pupils who have successfully taken part in DAPPER engagement programme.

For the last 12 weeks, 42 pupils have focused on improving behaviour, attendance, punctuality, progress and effort.

With different rewards at stake, pupils have worked hard to score enough points to earn their rewards.

16 pupils managed to successfully achieve the Gold award, with the top three places going to Lewis Carroll (4863), Kaitlin Finney (4822) and Spencer Clark (4535).

A closely fought team competition resulted in the lead exchanging hands in the final few weeks of the programme, with Team Roberts successfully winning the Dapper Champions League scoring an impressive 20398 points.

Celebrating Success

gold2.jpg

We celebrated the personal success of our year 11 pupils. They each received bronze, silver and gold certificates as part of our new ‘Going for Gold’ rewards scheme. Those with Gold certificates were also rewarded with cinema vouchers. All the pupils rewarded are either close to, at or above their end of year 11 targets with 6 months to go. We are certain that - with their continued high attendance, high effort and a comprehensive revision programme - they will achieve superb results in the summer. The next round of rewards are in March (after the next PPEs) and we look forward to seeing more pupils joining the ‘Going for Gold’ group.

Pictured in the photo are some of the 70+ pupils who celebrated their success today.

Tigers Trust Enterprise programme

trust11.jpg

Y8 pupils have been participating in the Tigers Trust Enterprise programme this half term. The programme sees them develop key employability skills such as leadership; communication; resilience and financial management and even included a visit to the KC stadium to speak to staff on how it runs as a business.

trust10.jpg

Pupils have been working in small groups each week completing a series of tasks related to how Hull City is ran as a business enterprise. Pupils even had to pitch a new fast food product to be sold at the ground in a Dragons Den style format and present to others. Pupils came up with some incredibly unique and desirable products.

Pupils have shown an excellent attitude and have learnt a lot of key skills that they will require in the future and the students have found the programme extremely relevant and useful. All pupils on the programme have gained an entry level ASDN qualification which can be used on their future CV’s. Pupils also won prizes for their contributions including a signed Hull FC football and match day tickets!

The programme will run again in January with a new cohort of Y8 pupils.

World Champion

millieweb1.jpg

We received some excellent news a few months ago; one of our Stars of the Future Millie competed in the IGC World Championships staged in the United States Florida.

We are pleased to announce Millie is the World Vault Champion for her age and skill category!!!

There were 39 girls in Millie's category from 6 other countries and she was placed 12th on the Beam, 1st for the Vault and overall 4th in the World for the highest aggregate score.

Millie trains at the SVG Gymnastics club in Sutton Village and along with 9 others from the club qualified to compete in the World Championships.

From everyone at Winifred Holtby, congratulations Millie, we are very proud of your wonderful achievements.

Our best ever results!

e60jpg.jpg

Our 2018 results are the best ever recorded at the Academy and clearly demonstrate significant and secure improvements across all subjects. This year our pupils sat the new, more challenging and rigorous GCSEs but still achieved higher grades than ever before. We are immensely proud of their achievements which are testament to their own hard work, the expertise and dedication of our staff and the support of their families.

e55.jpg

Over 60% of Year 11 pupils secured at least a Standard Pass (Grade 4+) in English and mathematics, with 40% achieving at least a Strong Pass (Grade 5+). Over 60% of pupils also secured a Standard Pass in science. Alongside these great outcomes, pupils performed well across the full range of other GCSE and BTEC qualifications.

Over the last few years we have worked tirelessly to raise expectations and aspirations as well as improving the quality of teaching at the Academy. It is clear to see that all of this work is having a positive impact on the outcomes that our young people achieve, opening doors for a much brighter future once they leave Winifred Holtby. However, we are not complacent and remain determined to make further improvements in future years.

Developing key skills in the work place

rf1.jpg

A small selection of Year 8 and Year 9 pupils have been working with volunteer mentors from businesses from around Hull in order to develop key skills needed in the world of work but to also provide them with vital support in order to break down barriers to their learning.

Pupils experienced a range of activities all planned and delivered by mentors including a visit to Smith & Nephews.

This morning they received a talk from a member of the fire service followed by a presentation of their certificates given out by their mentors.

Congratulations to all those pupils who have been nominated to receive an award.

We hope their families will join us for the ceremony which will take place at the Academy on Tuesday 24th April 2018. The ceremony will start at 5:30pm, admission will commence at 5:00pm.  The ceremony is scheduled to end by 7:30pm.

Please note that all pupils receiving an award will be required to wear the Academy uniform on the evening.

Due to the lengthy time of the event babies and toddlers will not be permitted into the Theatre but a professionally staffed crèche is provided at the Academy if required. Given the capacity of the Theatre we can currently offer 2 guest places to accompany each pupil. Additional seating may be available once numbers are confirmed.

If your child has received an award you would have received a letter. Please complete the reply slip and return to the Academy’s Reception as soon as possible.

Voices in a Million

voice.jpg

On Wednesday 14th March a group of 12 pupils performed at Wembley SSE Arena as part of the Voices in a Million project. The young people who attend have worked so hard for the last three/four months preparing songs, learning lyrics and learning dance moves - given up their time every Friday after school 3.00-4.30pm.

The day was a fantastic experience- even though there was a very early start. However, the pupils soon woke up once they had arrived at Wembley Arena and had the chance to meet HRVY and Road Trip in person!

The rest of the day was spent rehearsing the show to ensure that everything was prepared, ready for a great show in the evening- the evening show was certainly that! Pupils performed all of their songs along with the other thousands of school children from across the country! There were special performances by Lil’ T from The Voice as well as HRVY and Road Trip.

The pupils had a great time and were even singing most of the way home!
