Free books for all Year 7 pupils

All our Year 7’s were able to choose a free book of their choice as part of the national reading initiative,” BOOK BUZZ.”

“Bookbuzz” is a reading programme which gives schools the opportunity to offer pupils in year 7 the choice of a free book from a list of specially selected titles. The aim of “Bookbuzz” is to inspire excitement about reading and discover new books and authors. We hope your child enjoys their “Bookbuzz” book and that it encourages them to continue reading.

Top 20 Word Count

Mollie 9LMi, Riseholme, is this year’s new “Top 20 Word Count in the Academy” winner, having read over a million words and beating last year’s winner Paris, 9MSY Sudtone, who has taken 2nd place.

Well done to everyone who contributed to Sudtone. They read a very impressive   10,860,045 words, from September, achieved by scoring 70% of the book quiz correct.

Well done to everyone.

The James Reckitt Hull Children’s Book Award 2017

The winning book chosen by the pupils from nine of our Hull Academies who took part yesterday is……..  “The Best Medicine” by Christine Hamill.

Christine Hamill, author and teacher of creative writing from Belfast, visited Winifred Holtby Academy earlier this week. She talked to pupils in 7W3 and 7W4 about her book, and her personal battle with Cancer that inspired her first Children’s Book “ The Best Medicine”.

It is funny, moving, and strangely empowering in its determination to laugh in the face of the seemingly unbearable.”
— Christine Hamill

The day was really well organised by Hull Libraries, and the authors were there to inspire our pupils with their stories.

Our pupils were a credit to our Academy as always, having read the 5 nominations and contributing fully in the book debate with pupils from other schools. We also had four pupils attend from The Link, who have enjoyed reading the books too.

If you see any of our pupils who took part, please congratulate them, as reading five books that are not of your own choice is quite an achievement.
