Pupil Premium

PURPOSE

The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and academies with students who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years, those who are children looked after (CLA) and those who are service children. Schools and academies have the freedom to spend the Premium, which is additional to the underlying academy budget, in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable students.

This significant extra resource exists to enable us to overcome the challenges faced by our disadvantaged students. At Winifred Holtby Academy, we are committed to narrowing the attainment gap between students entitled to free school meals and those that are not, using this additional funding to pay for a range of specialised interventions, to ensure that these targeted groups of students make good progress.

USE OF PUPIL PREMIUM

The Pupil Premium is used at Winifred Holtby Academy to fund a range of provision and staff within the academy, that provide direct support and interventions for students who are entitled to FSM or are CLA. Examples include:

  • Pre and post academy activities that build motivation, engagement and improve opportunities for effective teaching and accelerating progress.

  • Providing small group work with an experienced teacher, focussed on overcoming gaps in learning.

  • Enrichment days, enabling disadvantaged students to learn skills needed for preparation for life and further education.

  • 1-1 support where our internal evidence suggests an impact.

  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through learning coaches, trained literacy and numeracy support staff, off-site provision for FSM students, where it is in the student’s academic and personal interest.

  • Use of the Sutton Trust and EEF research findings, to inform spending decisions on high quality impact-proven interventions, for example, training in high quality feedback, and peer tutoring.

  • The deployment of skilled and impact-tested external agencies and work programmes that specialise in narrowing gaps and improving outcomes for disadvantaged children and young people.
