In Key Stage 3 all pupils have access to 2 hours PE a week and follow a programme of sports including; invasion games, net/wall games, fielding and run scoring, swimming, OAA, dance and athletics.

The focus in Key stage 3 is to learn and apply new skills by planning, performing and evaluating skill drills and competitive games. All pupils are expected to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations as the performer, coach and umpire/referee.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum Outline

In Key Stage 4, pupils access 1 hour of PE a week and follow a core PE programme focused on Health and Fitness and lifelong sport.

Pupils also have the opportunity to study BTEC Sport in Year’s 9, 10 and 11. The BTEC course is taught through a mixture of practical and theoretical lessons and is a very popular option choice.

Future Opportunities and Pathways Post 16

BTEC Sport courses open pathways to BTEC level 3 and A level PE. It also links with the sports industry in the form of professional sports teams, the leisure industry, Physiotherapy, Personal Training, & Sports Coaching and leadership.

Our aim is to help pupils develop healthy, fit bodies, to enable them to take part in a wide range of both competitive and non-competitive physical activities.”

Extra Curricular Opportunities

Extra-Curricular activities play an important part in Winifred Holtby Academy life and as a department, Team PE offer a broad extra-curricular programme that includes; Football, Netball, Rugby (League and Union), Cross Country, Trampolining, Wheelchair Basketball, Swimming, Athletics, Rounders, Fitness, Basketball, Badminton, Tennis and Table Tennis.

We also run weekly success zones/coaching clinics based on the BTEC syllabus we offer in Key Stage 4. Pupils are surveyed regularly to ensure that they have an input on the sports and activities on offer and the weekly PE Bulletin on our Facebook page (whateampe) keeps them informed of upcoming events/competitions, whilst also celebrating the success of pupils.

In addition to the extra-curricular clubs on offer to pupils, we also work closely with the House teams to ensure we provide a variety of sporting competitions throughout the year
